A Puncher's Chance

18:1 for #18, how poetic. Gotta like that omen!

I'm good with dark horse status. Like the defeat in the preseason opener, that just serves for motivation and promotes attention to coaching.

Yeah, those opponents expecting the wheezing geezers are in for a rude awakening. I expect to do a lot of chortling this season.

basically what I said recently about the media lacking resources to pay close attention to every team.

First, all anyone had to do was watch the celtics first two NBAx games to realize that this year's team is not even comparable to last year's team. Let's take a quick look.

JT healthy and leader of bench (ray allen in playoffs= not healthy, and exactly who was leader of bench last year), JS healthy and a better rebounder than anyone on Cs last year, CW presumably healthy (not on team in playoffs), JG healthy and very likely improved and ready to become a terror (not on team last year), courtney lee healthy, multidimensional player (not on team last year), AB healthy (not on team against the Heat last year).

Now go back and look at the game 7 output by the C's bench. Nothing. Look at the names of the bench players. Next to nobody. To even talk about last year's team as shedding any light on how this year's team is ridiculous. And I haven't even mentioned darko. Nor have I mentioned the possibility, very likely too, that rondo ramps up his game to MVP status. That by itself is HUGE. You add the rest of this stuff, and most of his analysis simply sounds dated and uninformed.

I don't blame Zach for this. Nobody can know everything about every team. I think also that to make a name for yourself in the media you need to err on the side of caution, stick with the safe opinion. I don't agree with this. But whatever. I say if everyone else is saying the Cs are second tier with no chance, you make a name for yourself by saying why everyone else is wrong. And if it looks like you are right, well, you keep beating your own drum all season. What do I know.

Finally, the spurs. Give me a break. Every year, the media kisses their ass, and every year they run through the first part of the regular season, slow down, and then drop dead in the playoffs. Big whoop. What's exciting about that?

Winning in the playoffs comes down to more than just who has the most stars on their roster.

It comes down to depth and who has the most difference makers who can make a difference when the stakes are high.

The C's roster has as many candidates to be difference makers as does any other team. In fact, I'll be honest, I think they have the most candidates.

Age.

Projected starters age in playoffs

Rondo 27
Bradley 22
Garnett 36
Pierce 35
Bass 27

Other key rotational players

Sullinger 21
Darko 27
Jeff G 27
Courtney L 27
J Terry 35

Average age of starters 29.4
Average age of bench 27.4

Prime age of athletic career 28-32

I'm struggling with the label "old" for this team.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a unit of entirely young players outperform the other elite team's starters.

Darko/Sullinger, Sullinger/Bass, Green, Rondo, and Lee

Even if we throw in one Old Fogie, JET, that entire team is comprised of players who are not only young and talented, but weren't even on the roster last year, with the exception of Rondo, who, again, may be vastly improved this year.

whatever

talk is cheap

let's get it on

The whole conversation focuses on what the Cs can do to slow down the elite teams. Nobody seems to think anyone else will have a problem slowing down the Cs. Their offense stunk last year so it will again this year.

The Cs will slow themselves down.

We'll see.

First of all, while I like Zach and think his writing is smart, I agree that the injuries we sufferred last year was much, much worse than Mr. Bosh's abdominal strain. Avery had both shoulders repaired! That alone should trump the Heatles "injury woes."

Our team this year has more than a puncher's chance in my opinion. Yes, it was built to beat Miami, and it WILL beat Miami. I don't see anybody on the Heat doing anything different, and their additions (Rashard Lewis and No. 20) are old. Wade will not get better (he might be even worse) and I have no doubt KG will bully Bosh in the pivot.

I agree Lee, some people still have the idea that the Celtics are an old team but it couldn't be farther from the truth.

Agree Lex, the bench is going to be a huge difference this season. It's going to be like night and day. No way the bench scores 2 points in a game this season.

And because of that the starters will be playing more rested and be fresher for the playoffs.

People talking about how old the Celtics are haven't even looked at their roster this season. They weren't even that old last season. Injuries derailed them last season. Hopefully they stay healthy this season.

Now, the Knicks is an old team :)

It seems to me that if you are going to rank teams in an article, you should do your research and not rank a team lower because they are old when they aren't old.

But like I said, I'm good with it because this kind of stuff is going to motivate the team.
